I have started making making a weekly archive of my most intriguing and interesting blog posts for this week ending today 27/02/2016.
I ready quite over 50 different blog posts across over 10 blogs and I have selected the ones I can’t but share with you. So my Favourite GeoPosts aka FGPs as I will call them from now centred around ESRI, Google, Books and NOAA
The first is the story of how NOAA Satellites saved 250 lives in 2015. This head line got me when I saw it and the story selected for the success point makes it worth the position. I was wondering how meteorological and oceanographic satellites could do this.. I am sure you are thinking about that right now. The second slot goes to my best geo-firm and model company- ESRI. It is the news about the unveiling of the insights for Arcgis. I loved it because it provides me a solution to a new set of clients across different sectors. I am sure that it will encompass some enterprise tools that will extend the geospatial knowledge around business intelligence. Interested? Check it out on the ESRI blog with the title “That Aha! This third one is a very innovative and brain tasking one. Elementary geography taught us about Latitudes and Longitudes, the GIS brought in Geocoding. Now, I learnt that the pixels of my picture can predict my location. This is core machine learning based on the data they have been able to gather. Mehn these guys are something else!!!!! Indoor mapping has also been a point of consideration for me as there are quite a lot that can unroll from it e.g Smart guide for the visually impaired, indoor robotics etc. Now Google has decided to make bring tango to the hands of everyone with a Lenovo smart phone. Geoawesomeness reported that in their post titled “Google and Lenovo showcasing tango at MWC in Barcelona”.
Yeah so the fifth one is meant for those who are looking forward to making the best mapd of this generation. It is a post on the books every aspiring geogeek and expert cartographer needs to get. This year, I have a mandate to mentor ten (10) people who are interested about geospatial technologies and are willing to take the bull by the horn to learn and become GeoGeeks. While thinking of an approach to make the mentoring efficient, another idea came and was for me to have a #GeoGeeksConnect that brings geogeeks into talking about latest news, technologies, applications and new ways of approach to different problems. I have a type of model that I like that the #GeoGeeksInCars model used by GISuser.com.
I am now planning to have my first #GeoGeeksByNature on February 29, 2016. At the moment, I will be connecting with Akande Adeoluwa (Currently undergoing a Masters GIS programme under the Erasmus Mundus Masters Program in Portugal), he will be joining me with Ojumu Tijesu and we will be discussing the latest drone2map add-in for ArcGIS and the similar technology for QGIS, Google location Timeline (That amazes me) and also about GIS companies and capacity building in Nigeria.
This is supposed to be the first edition.. I am not scared to do this new thing ‘cos all i have to do is #Talk.

Now the saying “everything is somewhere” is an evolving talk in this technology era making the location based startups and solutions worth investment. The ability for organizations and individuals to relate with the real world abstractly is based on their ability to understand the locational phenomenon. This understanding has been well leveraged upon to create an industry that is worth $20bln as at 2015.
But most of this solutions have been ineffective in most developing nations and cities that are crowded but building patterns are not well planned to the level that conventional addressing can be adopted. An example of this scenario is in Lagos, Nigeria where over 70% of the buildings do not have an up-to-date addressing. This is due to the building patterns as well as the public negligence. In these communities, tech startups that are highly dependent on proper addressing and geocoding systems for efficient service delivery are developing across different niches e.g. Health, E-commerce, Logistics, travels, food service etc.
In Nigeria, the likes of Konga, Jumia and Max.ng are having real issues in making house to house delivery and also delivery of goods to the right locations. A Solution such as What3Words would have been efficient but it has not been able to solve the issue of a building based addressing system. A system that will assign a unique code and identifier for each house within an identified area, these code will be assigned against the latitude and longitude of the building.
This concept has been idealized and it is sure to work based on the conceptualization.
I hope to pitch this to people who might be interested in working with me on this; As of now I have spoken to Olusola Amusan, Tomiwa Ijaware and Dami Sonoiki as well as my team of partners: Tijesu, Wale and Ayomide.
If you want to think about the future of a city, 3-D is better than 2-D. You can see how streets, buildings, and transportation fit together in ways maps can’t really show you. That’s why developers have long developed physical 3-D models of their plans. Better to show the world what’s coming.
The step forward with 3-D planning software like CityEngine, a sophisticated tool from the GIS giant Esri, is the ability to conceive the urban environment on-the-fly. You want a bike lane? Press a button. You want to take out the bus rapid transit? No problem. Previously such re-modeling would take days and weeks, if it could be done at all.
The tool was originally developed for movies (it’s been used for films like Total Recall, Cars 2, and others). Now it’s widely employed in city planning departments. For example, Austin, Texas,created plans for its sustainable places project with it, including visualizations of a new urban rail system.
There are other examples such as CyberCity, 3D-GIS, Virtual Terrain among others. Why not try your hands join one sand make your hands really dirty? I have used it a couple of times and believe me it’s really cool. Its just a way of becoming a geo-prophet that tells the people and government what your area will be like in years.
Salary site payscale.com released the results of its 2014 college survey that looks at which college majors pay the best and are the most meaningful. The survey was developed from 1.4 million respondents to its PayScale Salary Survey which collects data about jobs, compensation, employer, demographics and educational background.
So what did those who majored in GIS report about their career status?
In terms of earning potential, GIS ranked 120 out of 207 majors with an early career salary of $41,800 and a mid-career salary of $67,900. Out of 193 majors, GIS ranked 81 on the list with 69% of respondents recommending the major to others. The survey also questions respondents about the meaningfulness of their jobs, asking if they felt like their job made the world a better place. GIS ranked 118 out of 207 majors with less than half (48%) responding “yes” to that question.
GIS Managers and GIS Analyst made the list for common jobs for social science majorswith 46% of managers and 41% of analysts holding a geography degree.
